Joseph’s Story

I couldn’t understand it. Mary and I were engaged, to be married, and now this had happened. How could she be pregnant! We had never been together. What will people think. I didn’t want to embarrass her, so I made the decision to break off the engagement quietly.

That night, as I tossed and turned on my bed, an angel of the Lord appeared to me in a dream. “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. She will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

So I did as the angel said. I married Mary. However, we did not sleep together until after the baby was born.

Some months later, when Mary was nearly full term, Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. Everyone had to return to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. Because I was a descendant of King David, I had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, which was David’s ancient home. So Mary and I left Nazareth and traveled to Bethlehem.
